As your career develops and you are busy keeping up with the latest regulations as well as the day to day business of auditing it's easy to lose sight of what you need to be doing for a successful career as an AVP in Internal Audit.
We recently asked some high profile Chief Internal Auditors in the Financial Services industry what their advice would be for an ambitious AVP or Audit Manager looking to accelerate their careers.
Here are their top 7 essentials to supercharge your career path.
1. UNDERSTAND THE BUSINESS
I mean REALLY understand it. How it works, what the products are, who the customers are, how the employees work together and what it takes to acheive great results.
2. HONE YOUR INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
As well as keeping up to date with all your technical skills ensure that your interpersonal skills are on track too. The need to be able to engage and communicate with stakeholders is so important to enable the Audit function to perform well within businesses.
3. UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF DOCUMENTION
Documention is the shop window to any Audit function and ensuring that it's not just 'admin' but enables Audit and the business to function smoothly is essential.
4. LISTEN AND LEARN
All the time! Feedback, even if it's not positive is essential for your personal growth and there is also a lot to learn from others in the industry who are passionate about it.
5. TAKE THE INITIATIVE
There are so many opportunities for growth and learning in Audit and getting involved can only lead to great learnings and great opportunities
6. NO PRESSURE
There is no need to put yourself under pressure to learn everything in one go. As your skills and knowledge develop so will your confidence not just in yourself but in your stakeholders too.
7. GET FUTURE PROOFED
Get excited, develop your Mastery and be ready for change. Technology will undoubtedly change the industry but by being ready for it you can ensure that you are well placed to pick up the opportunities it will offer.
While doing all of these 7 things might be a tough call the great thing is they can all be developed over time. Just make sure that you are constantly striving for improvement in yourself and in Audit.
